UNDERSTAND ENERGY FIRST
The one rule that governs everything
Abyssal Escape does not use health. It uses energy, and energy does two jobs: it is your life bar and it is your fuel. When it hits 0% your run is over. That single idea changes how you play, because dashing, which feels like a basic movement, is actually a resource decision.
Here is the priority order that keeps you alive without thinking too hard:
1. Walk by Default
Walking costs nothing. Movement speed is constant at 100 units per second. If there is no gap, no hazard and no enemy, walk.
2. Tap the Dash
A tapped dash costs 3% and covers about 70% of a full dash. Learn the tap first and use holds only when a gap genuinely requires them.
3. Watch the Bar, Not the Screen
Below 50% energy your dash distance halves and your speed drops to 60%. Glance at the bar before committing to a jump, not after you land short.
4. Bank Before New Ground
Enter every new area with a full bar. Small orbs give 5%, large ones 20% and enemy kills 15%, so topping up is quick if you look for it.
YOUR FIRST HOUR
A steady route through the first areas
Step 1: Learn the Dash (Level 1)
You wake in a dark cell with movement only. Dash at least a dozen times before you leave. The game never explains the cost in a tutorial, so build the habit early: tap for most things.
| Goal | Reach the first checkpoint |
| Collect | Every energy orb in the cell |
| Mistake | Holding dash out of habit |
Step 2: Fall on Purpose (Level 2)
The falling chambers have platforms that crumble under you. This level teaches you to descend on your terms, and it ends with Wall Jump, the first real ability and the one that opens most of the early secrets.
| Goal | Descend the falling chambers |
| Collect | Wall Jump, and the Level 2 energy cache |
| Mistake | Standing on a crumbling platform too long |
Step 3: Learn to Pass (Level 3)
Guards patrol fixed routes and wind up before they attack. You do not have to fight anything in the Abyss to survive it. Watch two patrol loops, find the gap, and slip through. Come back later if you need the energy.
| Goal | Reach the far door past the patrols |
| Collect | Energy from guards, optional |
| Mistake | Fighting every guard you meet |
YOUR FIRST BOSS
The Drowned Sentinel, Level 4
The Drowned Sentinel is the first real test and the most forgiving boss in the game. Its lunge is always preceded by a lantern flash. That flash is your cue: dash sideways, let it commit, then hit it while it recovers.
- • Enter with a full bar. A failed attempt costs 20% and a second one can end the run.
- • Dash on the lantern flash, not on the lunge itself. The telegraph gives you the frame.
- • Standing in flood water drains 1% per second, so fight near the dry ledge if you can.
- • Its reward is a large orb worth 20% plus the next checkpoint.
If You Cannot Get Past It
Return to Level 3 and clear the patrols. Each guard kill is worth 15%, enough to enter the boss room at full energy every time. There is no timer on this fight, so there is no reason to rush it.
CHECKPOINT HABITS
The most important habit in the game
When you die you lose all energy and respawn at your last activated checkpoint with 0% energy. That sounds harmless, but it means a checkpoint is your restart button and your health pack at the same time. Activating one restores 25% immediately, and standing near an active one restores another 10% after a death.
- • Touch every checkpoint you pass. There is no cost to activating one.
- • After a death, respawn and immediately walk back to the checkpoint for the 10%.
- • If a section keeps killing you at low energy, it is usually a checkpoint problem, not a skill problem.
PROGRESSION MILESTONES
What to aim for and when
| Milestone | Where | What You Unlock |
|---|---|---|
| First ability | Level 2 | Wall Jump for vertical shafts and the first secret cache |
| First boss | Level 4 | Large orb and the flooded passage checkpoint |
| Second ability | Level 5 | Extended Dash for the long shaft gaps |
| Mid-game wall | Level 7 | The Warden, plus 50% energy behind it |
| Third ability | Level 9 | Gravity Anchor, which makes the Level 8 wells controllable |
| Exit | Level 12 | The gate, the final orb set, and the ending |
MISTAKES TO STOP MAKING
Fix these and the game gets much easier
Holding the Dash Button
A held dash burns 10% every burst. Tapping covers the same jump for 3%. This single habit is most of your energy bill.
Fighting at Low Energy
A fight you enter at 30% is a fight you cannot finish. Retreat to a checkpoint, refill, and try again. There is no score penalty for that.
